After a successful career as a fine artist, I decided—at 72—that I wanted to start blogging. Since I already had a site devoted to my artwork, I chose to call my blog “Apart from my Art”. Enjoy!

Five good things for the New Year and Beyond!

Five good things for the New Year and Beyond!

  1. When was the last time you bought new lingerie?

So forget the diet that will last for two days and forget the exercising that we’ll blow off. Instead buy new bras and panties. That’s right. You can do that. When was the last time you bought a new bra? I thought so. You’re afraid you’ve gotten bigger or smaller. How about panties? How do they really look? Be honest. I know, I know you’re still wearing pjs or sweats these days, but really you do ever look at yourself? Don’t want to buy a size bigger after this past year? I get it. Don’t look at the size, just buy new fresh undies. I love the ones with high legs that also cover the tummy. Bikinis only show off my poochy tummy as opposed to the high leg that shows off a nice leg! My favorite ones are this Walcoal and this Bali. But look around. Choose the fabric and style that works for you. Treat your self and buy some new panties. Do you have favorites you can recommend?

Here are a few articles to help you choose some new panties for yourself.

Bras? If you’ve got big boobs , have I got a minimizer for you. It’s the Soma 3 inch Minimizer Bra and it really works. Trust me I’ve tried them all.

While you’re there. Check out their panties. Great prices and a variety of designs.

Now I usually don’t go around asking people what panties they wear but Elizabeth Kirkpatrick The Vintage Contessa.net told me she loved her panties from Soma.

2. When was the last time you had a pedicure?

Do you even feel safe getting one? I don’t. Guess what. I’ve got a gift for you. Olive and June that eponymous nail polish and nail salon has come up with a brilliant pedi system to compliment their manicure system. They have classes to teach you how to give yourself a mani and pedi. They’re informative and fun. You’re now going to be a master of your own feet!!! Just take a look at my toes. I did it using all of the products included in their kit plus my favorite one of their polishes is CV. I love it!

I also love their manicure kit. It’s the perfect gift for that friend that has everything. Sara Gibson Tuttle, the creator and owner of this company, suggests, no insists, that you do not soak your fingernails or toenails in water. She says it swells the nail beds and prevents the manicure and pedicure from lasting. So you save a lot of time by not soaking.

The Pedi Kit was gifted to me but I have purchased the Manicure Kit for a number of my friends. It’s a very special gift.

You say you can’t do your nails? That’s what I thought. But follow the directions and practice. It takes about 5-7 times and then you’ll be a master. I can now do my nails in 15 minutes but I’m not advocating that. In fact your manicure will last much longer if you wait about 15 minutes between coats.

Oh, and I love the brush that’s included to touch up mistakes. I’m telling you, they provide everything you need. Now is your time to master manicures and pedicures. I’ve done it!

This Pedi Kit is everything you will need.

3. When was the last time you enjoyed a new book?

I’ve got a book for you that is both satisfying and fulfilling. Everyone in my Book Club really enjoyed it, as did my husband and son. Talk about universal appeal. It’s an old book, but as they say, it’s an oldie but a goodie. Satisfy your soul and read this book.

4. When was the last time you savored

a delicious home made pea soup?

IMG_4263.JPG

This is my favorite pea soup because it has caraway seeds in it. It’s almost like having rye bread in your soup. .It’s so good, easy to make and soothing to the tummy. Trust me, it will be one of your new favorite winter soups. The recipe is from Dairy Hollow House Bread and Soup Book by Crescent Dragonwagon.

Dairy_Hollow_House_Bread_andsoup.JPG

Pea Soup with Caraway Adelle

2 cups dried split peas

7 cups any well-flavored vegetable or chicken stock or water. ( I use 2x 32 oz. of chicken broth)

1 bay leaf

2-3 teaspoons caraway seeds

1 jalapeno pepper, seeded for a less hot soup, and diced

1 large onion, chopped

2 ribs celery, diced

2 carrots scrubbed or peeled and sliced

2 or 3 small potatoes scrubbed and diced ( I use Yukon Gold potatoes)

2-3 cloves garlic, peeled and put through a garlic press or finely chopped

2 teaspoons Pickapeppa or Worcestershire Sauce

Freshly ground black pepper to taste

Salt to taste

In a large heavy soup pot, combine the split peas, stock or water, bay leaf, caraway seeds, and jalapeño. Bring to a boil, then turn down the heat to low and let simmer, covered, 30 minutes. Add the remaining ingredients except the salt and continue to simmer until the peas and vegetables are tender about 30 minutes more. Season with salt and serve hot.

( I find I need to cook it the soup longer. Keep your eye on it so that the bottom doesn’t burn. Add more liquid as needed.)

5. When was the last time you Jumped?

Have you seen the movie “Love Actually” ? It’s a Christmas movie but you can watch it at any time to enjoy a delightful movie. In it Hugh Grant does a joyous dance to the song “Jump” by the Pointer Sisters. Well, he inspired me to create my version of it. So let me know what you think Hugh? Enjoy!
